DEPENDING ON OUR ADVOCATE JESUS CHRIST. I JOHN 2:1-6...MY LITTLE CHILDREN, THESE THINGS WRITE I UNTO YOU, THAT YE SIN NOT, AND IF ANY MAN SIN, WE HAVE AN ADVOCATE WITH THE FATHER, JESUS CHRIST THE RIGHTEOUS. AND HE IS THE PROPITIATION FOR OUR SINS AND NOT FOR OURS ONLY, BUT ALSO FOR THE SINS OF THE WHOLE WORLD. AND HEREBY WE DO KNOW THAT WE KNOW HIM, IF WE KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS. HE THAT SAITH, I KNOW HIM, AND KEEPETH NOT HIS COMMANDMENTS, IS A LIAR, AND THE TRUTH IS NOT IN HIM. BUT WHOSO KEEPETH HIS WORD IN HIM VERILY IS THE LOVE OF GOD PERFECTED; HEREBY KNOW WE THAT WE ARE IN HIM. HE THAT SAITH HE ABIDETH IN HIM OUGHT HIMSELF ALSO SO TO WALK, EVEN AS HE WALKED. I. HOLY LIVING POSSIBLE ONLY THROUGH JESUS. I JOHN 2:12I
John 1:8-10;
John did not write to discourage Christians from desiring to live a holy life. In chapter 2, he made it clear his purpo In se in writing this letter was to help Christians not sin. God wants Christians to live holy lives. He call us to live set apart from sin and set apart to Him. We must realize that sanctified living does not happen just by human efforts. The best Christian can determine to be and live holy, yet disappoint himself in his efforts to be godly. We still struggle with a sinful nature. Holy living depends on Jesus Christ. A part from our relationship with Him, holiness cannot develop. In a right relationship with Him, our desire to live holy can become a reality. Jesus Christ is our advocate before the Father. As a attorney pleading his client’s cause as he faces charges in a court of law; the same is Jesus. When we sin, Christ does not forsake us. He pleads our case before the Father. Jesus also shows mercy to Christians who have sinned. He is the propitiation (the atoning sacrifice), for our sins. The same mercy He showed when He went to the cross for our sins is needed by Christians who have sinned. But can guard against sinning.
